There’s a chance you’ve heard the word intersectionality before, and possibly even reflected on what it means and how it impacts you, regardless of how you may identify. But what does it mean? The third module of this course introduces intersectionality and briefly discusses how overlapping and intersecting identities play a role in how racism and racialization are affected.

The objectives of this module are to:

  • Learn the origins and definition of the concept of intersectionality
  • Identify and recognize  intersectionality and interpret how differing and overlapping identities can influence and shape experiences
  • Apply intersectional thinking to real-life examples

To get everyone on the same page, we will start by watching a short introductory video, which will explain the origins and break down the concept of intersectionality. As you watch, feel free to reflect on the following:

  • What identity groups do you fall into?
  • How might your experiences differ from those of somebody else who identifies differently?
  • Why do we need to consider intersectionality in the context of racism?
